के बारे में

Professor Dayal Saran
(6.9.1934 - 8.1.2014)
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur

Prof. Dayal Saran passed away in the morning of 8 January 2014 at the Kanpur Hallet Hospital where he had been admitted from 27 December 2013.

Prof. Dayal Saran joined the Department of Physics at IIT Kanpur on 1 August 1960. He gave the very first Introductory Physics Lecture in the Institute to first year students, and also shouldered the responsibility of planning for courses of studies and teaching labs with the Director, Dr. Kelkar.

At the time of retirement from service (30 September 1994), he was engaged in research in Phase Transition Studies in Liquid Crystals. Prof. Saran actively participated in setting up of the Crystal Physics Research Laboratory wherein most of the equipments such as furnaces, vacuum systems, crystal growing apparatus etc. were made indigenously. He was also involved in upgradation of X-ray lab, UG labs, re-writing of lab manuals, and had a book (Problems in Physics) published by Wheelers.

Post retirement, he served as Director of the Institute of Engineering and Technology under CSJM University (later renamed University Institute of Engineering and Technology) for about 13 years.

Prof. Dayal Saran was an extremely warm person and a gentleman, much loved by students, faculty, and the Institute community. The Institute deeply mourns his sad demise. He is survived by his wife Pushpaji and family.

It is a sad news that (Prof) Dayal Saran has left us reaching his heavenly abode. He was my collegue for about 18 years not only in the physics dept., but also when I moved to Advanced Center for Materials Science/Materials Science Faculty. Our association was very special as we willingly lived a simple life of helping & encouraging student community & others professionally. Not too long ago, I have talked to him from Texas & California about the purpose of final stages of our lives. He was fond of singing Bolliwood music of late Mukesh.Although he is no longer with us, the eternal memories of his life will always be remembered. On behalf of all his friends in USA, I convey our heartfelt condolences to Pushpaji & other members of family

My family joins me in paying our tribute the great and dignified personality. We have many fond remembrance of staying with him as neighbours in IIT K campus during my stint their. He is a father figure par excellence who will strive to make your life better and guide you with his caring concerns while he will keep all his problems hidden underneath his smiling face. DR Dayal Saran was my teacher in 1961 to 63 period and a guide like an elder brother when I returned to join as a faculty in 1973. He was a key player in setting up the physics lab and hostel facilties when IITK started. He would borrow equipment from friends at PPN college for conducting experiments at the IIT Phy lab then in HBTI bldg and return the item to PPN earlty next morning for their own use. Cycle rickshaw was the only transport available. Mrs Saran taught our children in school at the campus. Dr Saran was ever a gentleman and that was evident even during our last visit to their home about an year ago. We pray peace for the departd soul.

very sad to hear about the demise of Dr Dayal Saran. Though I did not have much interaction with him, our PhD guide was the same, viz., the tough man late Prof. A. S. Parasnis.

Prof. Saran was Director at UIET CSJM University when I joined it in 2004. As an administrator, he used to tackle any problem in a cool and calm manner. He was very kind at heart and believed in forgiving rather than punishing his subordinates for mistakes. He was emotionally connected to the UIET staff and students. I visited him in his residence at Navsheel Dham quite a few times after his retirement and always found him with a desire for life. I wish I could obtain his blessings for some more times!
