I was taught by Dr. Dayal Saran.I remember his ever smiling countenance.I pray that peace be bestowed on the departed soul and strength for his near and dear ones.

Prof. Dayal Saran passed away in the morning of 8 January 2014 at the Kanpur Hallet Hospital where he had been admitted from 27 December 2013.
Prof. Dayal Saran joined the Department of Physics at IIT Kanpur on 1 August 1960. He gave the very first Introductory Physics Lecture in the Institute to first year students, and also shouldered the responsibility of planning for courses of studies and teaching labs with the Director, Dr. Kelkar.
At the time of retirement from service (30 September 1994), he was engaged in research in Phase Transition Studies in Liquid Crystals. Prof. Saran actively participated in setting up of the Crystal Physics Research Laboratory wherein most of the equipments such as furnaces, vacuum systems, crystal growing apparatus etc. were made indigenously. He was also involved in upgradation of X-ray lab, UG labs, re-writing of lab manuals, and had a book (Problems in Physics) published by Wheelers.
Post retirement, he served as Director of the Institute of Engineering and Technology under CSJM University (later renamed University Institute of Engineering and Technology) for about 13 years.
Prof. Dayal Saran was an extremely warm person and a gentleman, much loved by students, faculty, and the Institute community. The Institute deeply mourns his sad demise. He is survived by his wife Pushpaji and family.
