I am really shocked to hear this. Whereas I did not know Er. Alam personally, I used to see that many of the CC emails are sent by him. Through that I was aware that he was a very senior engineer in CC. And IITK CC was certainly one of the greatest computer and internet facilities I have ever used. My condolences to his family, however futile my gesture.

Whenever I went to him or called him for any issue related to email, he would immediately sort it out with great speed and efficiency. Aftab Alam was a noble soul and a thorough professional. He always wore an infectious smile on his face and was a cheerful person. I will sorely miss him personally. Its a huge loss for the bereaved family and his children. I know Er. Alam for the last 25 years. We had spent few quality times during my student days at IITK. I had a long conversation with him on Saturday (3rd Oct 2015) and I enjoyed the moments without knowing that this will be the last one. I certainly miss one of my good friends of yesteryears. May God grant peace to his soul and enough strength to family members to over come this loss.

I was shocked and very saddened to hear of the demise of Mr. Aftab Alam. I knew him for many years through my father and we had many interactions about Linux, HP-UX, and related things. I spent hours in his office when I was younger, and he was a very patient and affectionate person. Later when I was a student at IIT Kanpur, he was extremely helpful on the few occasions when I consulted him. Many things changed in the Computer Center over the years as I grew up on campus, but it was heartening to see that many core members of it -- him in particular -- remained there and continued to enjoy system administration, reverse engineering, and tackling some very technical problems with networking, security, hacking, etc. I had not seen him for a few years since I left IIT Kanpur, but I have often reminisced about the late evening discussions with him over tea. He will be missed dearly by the entire campus community, and by several generations of students who he so patiently helped.

This is shocking. Aftab was an active member of CC team and has Contributed a lot to the system. I suggest that 'QASID' may be renamed as "AFTAB" if technically possible. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

My sincere condolences. As it often happens on this campus, I got to know him closely when we were partners on JEE IR duty - at Gorakhpur. He was sincere, competent andthoroughly devoted to his duty. I remember almost every moment we worked together. His demise is untimely, to say the least.
