ENG439A - Literature And Censorship

Censorship is defined as the restrictions that are imposed on the writer and writings by centers of power like the state, religious institutions or other social organizations. These external restrictions can lead to self imposed censorship, in the form of inhibitions which prevent the writer from expressing his I her views and thoughts openly. The course attempts to understand why writing is perceived as a threat to established institutions like the state or organized religion, and the impact of such restrictions on writing. Besides, it also analyzes the process of censorship as it has been practiced, and still is practiced, in various parts of the world. The efficacy of this restrictive measure will be evaluated with the help of texts that have created controversies for going against accepted notions of morality or religious beliefs.
