Course Contents

General (10-12 lectures)

  1. Localized and delocalized bonding models. A review of various bonding models in inorganic chemistry with appropriate examples.
  2. Symmetry, Point Groups and applications of symmetry. Introduction to symmetry elements and operations, point groups, character tables and uses in applications such as bonding. 
  3. Chemical forces including weak interactions and the basic aspects of crystal engineering.
  4. Structural characterization tools for inorganic compounds.

Main-group [10-12 lectures] 

  1. Inorganic rings and cages: Boranes, P-N , Si-O, Al-O systems.
  2. Low-valent compounds containing main-group elements.
  3. Multiple-bonding in compounds containing main group elements.

Transition Metals [20-22 lectures]

  1. Transition metal chemistry-A review of basic theories of bonding in coordination complexes
  2. Term symbols and electronic spectra of transition metal compounds
  3. Magnetism of coordination complexes. Single molecule magnets
  4. Supramolecular Chemistry
  5. Organometallic compounds- various types of organometallic compounds including metal carbenes and their reactivity.
