Dr. Arun Chandra Pandey was born in Faizabad, U.P.in September 1936. He went through his school education in U.P., and obtained his B.A. degree from Agra University in 1957, LL.B. from Lucknow University in 1959, and M.A. in Linguistics from Lucknow University in 1963.
Dr. Pandey joined as a faculty member in English in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences in May 1964. In the late 1960s he spent some time in UCLA, USA on a KIAP (Kanpur Indo-American Program) fellowship, and returned in 1970 with a certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Thereafter, he pursued his Ph.D.in Linguistics under the supervision of Prof.P.P.Sah, and completed his doctoral work on some aspects of Hindi phonology in 1979.
He continued as a faculty member at IIT Kanpur until July 1 1994, at which time he took voluntary retirement. He then settled in Bhopal, M.P.
Dr. Pandey's specialization was in generative phonology, historical linguistics, and Indo-Aryan linguistics. He made valuable contributions to the area of Hindi phonology. In addition, he had a special interest in theater, an interest he actively pursued even after his retirement.
Dr.Pandey passed away after a phase of ill health in Bhopal, in the morning of February 20, 2012. He is survived by his wife and a son.
A quiet, warm-hearted, and self-effacing person, Dr. Pandey will be respectfully remembered for his dedication and commitment to his teaching and other responsibilities. All of his colleagues and students have fond memories of Dr. Pandey as an excellent, conscientious teacher and a simple human being.
